St Omer vs US Open

Tour Diary

After missing three cuts in a row, and then shooting +4 in my first round in Belgium, I had a call from Laura saying she had a wacky idea…

I thought: what’s she up to now? … But she said that she would drive to France with the girls and meet me.

To pack up and drive a three year old and a 7 month old baby to France is some effort, as it could go wrong pretty easily…

Thankfully our girls are amazing and have both travelled from being very young, so up at 3am they got, picked up Laura’s mum, and then headed for the Eurotunnel!

They got to the caravan site in France by Sunday lunch time and I actually made the cut in Belgium, as I mentioned in my blog, so I arrived Sunday evening to my support team!

I really can’t thank them enough for making the effort to come to see me, and help take my mind off golf for a few days.

So Monday we visited Dunkirk and one of the war museums, then over the next three days around my practice we did a lot of swimming with Jess and Olivia! They love it!        BACK TO THE GOLF IN ST OMER

I really don’t mind the course in St Omer, but 50% of the field hate it with a passion!

And from reading all the stuff on the U.S. Open this year, the courses can be compared slightly…

You have to play well to score well; if you’re off your game you have no chance! But you need some luck; the greens were fast, sloped and a pretty poor surface!

So not many people were holing putts and the scores are never great, which showed with a +3 cut!

I actually played quite nicely for the first two days; my game is getting there but I holed NOTHING worth talking about.

A couple a bad drives made for a few bogeys and worse, but a birdie finish to my second round meant a 5 hour wait to find out if I made the cut!

But after packing my bags and the car to go home, I made the weekend again and lived to fight another day!

I hoped to get my game to gel a bit more and to move up the leader board and add some extra pennies to the OOM!   THE WEEKEND REPORT

Round 3: Same old, same old… No momentum; some great shots but never capitalised on them! A good birdie on 17 meant I signed for +2 total, but not what ‘moving day’ is all about!

Had to hope that round 4 would offer a little more and a result which I could take to Scotland to build on…

Round 4: Now that was better! And nice to move UP the board again in the final round!

I played decent but holed a couple of nice putts this time which in tougher, windier conditions meant 69 (-2) was a great score and one of the best of the day!

So after making the cut on the mark, to finish … was great!

So that’s another week ticked off the schedule and I’m one of only a few players not to miss an event yet… Hopefully that winter fitness work is keeping me going!

A long journey home in the car, and luckily I got to be home for Laura’s 30th birthday on the Monday and have a belated Father’s Day with the girls before heading north in the car again to Aviemore (Scotland) for one of the biggest CT events of the year!

Let’s do this!!!
