COACH'S 9th - 05/01/07 - Even after the year that Chris had, we still always go back to basics before the season starts again. There are always the fundamentals that need checking up on. This winter we aim to work even harder and now that Chris is working with Craig Coulson his Physio we will be able to improve his swing even more. At the moment we are working on the basic "Chip and Run" as it is something that this year may have cost Chris a few shots!!

TECHNIQUE: I like Chris to feel upright to the ball as though the heal of the club is nearly off the ground. The ball position to be parallel to the back foot, and to use the bottom of the grip for more control. From here I like to see the club taken back on line keeping the spin on the ball neutral and then to work on the controlled follow through. Chris has a habit of recoiling from the finish position which can lead to inconsistent strikes and distances. If you work on that final position hold you will start to see better results and more often!!

COACH'S 8th - 24/7/06 - TEMPO - After to spending many an hour at The Open this year the one thing you can notice is the TEMPO the players swing it at. They are all the same, not one player seems to have that quick, out of place backswing or that fast movement from the top. They are all SMOOTH! This is something myself and Chris have been working on recently and I really am looking forward to seeing his results this week!!

COACH'S 7th - 17/02/06 - When practising it is very important to be competitive, whether it be against yourself or somebody else! This weeks tip is a putting game which will keep you on the ball for you competitive matches - 'In-a-Row' Game -- For two or more players. One player selects a hole and a distance out from the hole and has 5 tries to sink the first putt. If he fails in 5 tries, he stops with '0 in a row.' If he sinks a putt before his 5 tries are exhausted, he then continues putting so long as he can string together a row of sinks. Once the string ends, he has 'In a row' however many putts he sank in a row. The next player also has 5 tries to get started on a series of sinks from the same distance (not necessarily from the same location) and tries to sink 1 more 'in a row' than any other player. The player with the longest string 'in a row' gets 1 point and the honour of selecting the next hole and distance. The first player to reach 5 wins the game. Two players can usually putt at the same time, more or less, so there is no waiting turns and the game moves along.

COACH'S 6th - 23/01/06 - "The Stock Shot" Like I said before, in Chris's case this shot is a slight fade but with a very strong flight. To play it this way the ball must be teed down, sitting about an inch off the deck at the most. The ball is brought a little bit back in the stance and the club is then swung on a slightly out to in path, which gives it that controlled fade. The back swing should also be considerably shorter for that extra control! This shot is all about how you feel as in stance, ball position and swing, but which ever way you find it best to play then stick with it because it will help your game, especially in those tricky situations! GOOD LUCK!!

COACH'S 5th - 17/01/06 - Having a shot off the tee that you are comfortable with is so important! In Chris's case its what we call the "stock shot" its a slight fade every time! When the hole is narrow or it is new territory then the "stock" is always the shot. This is something you need to find in your game and will help you so much! It could be a slight fade or a hard draw down the right, its whatever feels the best to you. (will explain "stock shot" next week)

COACH'S 4th - 22/12/05 - As balance is so important, you cant do enough exercises to help it. Doing a variety of sit ups will strengthen your core, helping you to turn better throughout the swing with a more consistent balance.

COACH'S 3rd - 10/12/05 - For a golfer to make a powerful and controlled swing they have to be in balance! When practising, a great drill is to hit balls off one leg, and also with your feet together. This will work on your balance along with making the correct turn on the way back. But don't try to force the shot or you may find yourself on the deck!!

COACH'S 2nd - 2/12/05 - Putting grip - the putter should be placed in the life line of the left hand, this helps to keep the face square through impact, and helps prevent "gating"

COACH'S 1st - 26/11/05 - "Shot stopping" You would not see a Goalkeeper slumped over in a net would you? He stands in an athletic position and this is exactly how you should feel over the ball!! Having a good posture is a great start and will give you balance throughout the swing!
