Here we go again!! 2015!

Tour Diary

So Christmas and New Year are now out of the way and my preparation for the 2015 season is well underway!

I really hope you all enjoyed the festive period and had a cracking New Year’s Eve!!

Christmas was pretty manic here with lots of family around but for once we had a really quiet

New Year’s Eve, which I personally did not mind at all!

But now all the mince pies have gone, and the Christmas food is finally finished off, I can set my sights on achieving all my 2015 goals!

So far I have wintered well and after sitting down with Mark (coach) we have touched on a few new aspects for my winter development.

After many hours of research from Mark, and after close inspection of my stats and how I feel about my game, between us we felt that a constant improvement of my putting along with a distance gain this winter could really prove beneficial.

So what can affect distance? 1. Equipment; 2. Technical; 3. Physical.

I’m pretty sure the driver I’m using from Taylormade is not far off perfect; the guys provide a fantastic fitting service for their staff players and I can’t wait to try the new R15, as their product development gets better year on year!

My technical swing is all right … it repeats most of the time and I rarely hit it too far off line … but from examining it in closer detail (through a biomechanics screening) I really don’t use my lower half of my body well enough. Far too many power sources are not even close to being activated and when you see the likes of Rory off the tee, he really is maximising what potential he has and he still hits it straight!

There’s also no hiding from the fact that I need to get fitter/faster and stronger, so since the end of December I’ve been working closely with Rachael Tibbs from Dynamic Golf and I’m excited about what I can achieve with her help and support.

So some sweat and tears from me in the gym, combined with the technical work from Mark, and I’m looking forward to some distance gains come the start of my season in March.

Looking ahead to the year, it’s going to be pretty manic … but for the first time EVER I actually have a proper warm weather pre season planned!

Me and the family are heading to Spain (Marbella) for the month of February so that I can practise in a better climate and they can enjoy a taste of Spain before Jess goes to school and while Laura is still on maternity leave with Olivia.

I have never had that quality of preparation before going into a season as I’ve only ever had the odd week or few days away. But it’s not just the weather I will benefit from, the conditions of the practice facilities and courses will be far superior for the time of year.

Getting away like this is something I’ve always wanted to do but never really had the opportunity to do so … just think how good it must be for the development of the Spanish players etc to be able to practise outdoors all year round and be on good putting surfaces consistently.

Just the planning of the trip excites me!!!

On return from Spain, I may only be back for two days before flying straight back out to Barcelona for a pro-am at PGA Catalunya; this will be great competitive play before the season kicks off in Madeira two weeks later.

Talking about Madeira and the first event of the year, it’s a real chance to get off to a good start on the Challenge Tour, as again this event is co-sanctioned with the main European Tour.

The course is pretty tricky, scoring is not great and most people dislike it, so that sounds like a perfect combination to me. Last year the event was shortened to two rounds with one round cut due to the fog.

I missed the cut by one, but really feel I know what it takes to play that course next time round.

So after the event in Madeira, there are only two events the following month in April – Kenya and Madrid – but then as you will see on the schedule, it really is non-stop from then on! You could play every week through the summer, which would be crazy; most people will try to plan breaks due to fatigue, the cost of travelling and other commitments back home.

So, here we go again on another year on the Challenge Tour and hopefully my last! It’s been great to see three friends who I regularly travel with get promoted to the main Tour but it only gives me more belief and more desire to join them!!

I’m also looking for an exciting sponsor for this season who would like to join the journey and share my ambition to become a winner on the European Tour!
